21 Jan: Arrival

Arrival at Cape Town International Airport where you are welcomed and then transferred to the boutique lodge for check in to rest and refresh. A welcome dinner and orientation take place in the evening as you settle in to your first night in the Mother City.

22 Jan: Table Mountain and Cape Islamic Heritage Tour
We begin the day with a delightful breakfast as we set off to explore the legacy of the first origins of Islam to arrive on the shores of South Africa. No visit to Cape Town is complete without ascending the top of the most defining feature of Cape Town, Table Mountain, and experiencing views of unparalleled beauty from this majestic resident of the Mother City. Our Cape Islamic Tour takes us to the suburb of District Six, where non-white residents were removed by force during apartheid. The delightfully colourful suburb of Bo-Kaap hosts us for a visit as we discover the history of the rich Cape Malay community and visit the first masjid established in South Africa.
23 Jan: Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens
After breakfast, you will enjoy a guided tour of Africa’s largest and most beautiful garden, the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, followed by a visit to a local working artist’s studio where 20 previously disadvantaged artists are employed. You will meet the artists, see how things are made and enjoy a private wiring workshop where you’ll get to try your hand at beading and make your own keyring!
24 Jan: Cape Peninsula
Following breakfast, you will commence a full day of exploration of the peninsula of the iconic Mother City passing the scenic University of Cape Town nestled on the slopes of Devil’s Peak through to the beach of Muizenberg, the home of surfing in Cape Town. For the next 15km you will wind along the beautiful coast of False Bay till you reach the Boulders Penguin Colony in Simon’s Town where an opportunity to swim in a secluded cove with the penguins presents itself. Our journey continues to the southernmost point of the Cape peninsula, the Cape Point, which is an array of natural flora and fauna and rolling hills and beaches. Here you get to visit the Cape of Good Hope as well as the cliff-top Cape Point lighthouse.
25 Jan: Robben Island and the V&A Waterfront
After breakfast, you will be transported to the infamous Robben Island, well known internationally as the place where Nelson Mandela and other leading anti-apartheid activists spent decades incarcerated. Less well known is that some of the pioneers of Islam in the Cape were brought to Robben Island as political prisoners from India, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and Java (the largest of Indonesia’s islands) by their Dutch colonists in the 1700s to early 1800s. The remainder of the day is at leisure at the V&A Waterfront.
26 Jan: Departure
Following breakfast, you’ll have time at leisure until transfers to Cape Town International Airport for departure.

South Africa & Victoria Falls Review

My experience with Sojourn Tours was overall excellent. We started with finding the Islamic tour of Cape Town and requested to add on additional South Africa experiences to “see the country”.

Sumaiya was very helpful in planning our whole trip and was receptive to our specific needs and wishes. Our tour guides were friendly, knowledgeable, and flexible. They were experienced and able to give us the best opportunities taking into consideration our interests. Our final itinerary had a nice balance of activities that we enjoyed but also flexibility to relax, not to mention opportunity to change or add more as we desired. It really felt very personalized. It was exactly the type of tour I enjoy – a mix of beauty and fun, but also educational.

We learned so much about the history of South Africa, and the current social atmosphere after apartheid. We were blessed to visit and experience so many natural wonders – climates, scenic vistas, animals and fauna! My only critique is that despite our well-planned trip, there is so much more to see in South Africa! I look forward, God willing, to an opportunity to return to South Africa and would happily use Sojourn Tours again.
